Best things to do in Garstang

1st of November, 2020

The historic market town of Garstang is located at the heart of Lancashire, within striking distance of iconic Blackpool, the Lake District and the Forest of Bowland. Visitors don’t need to leave the town, however, to find places of interest and activities to enjoy. Garstang provides a wealth of opportunities for memorable days out and short breaks.

The historic market town

With Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts, the medieval “weinds” (narrow, named alleyways) leading from the High Street, and nearby Greenhalgh Castle built in the 1400s, the historical allure of Garstang is undisputed. Garstang was mentioned in the Domesday Book, known then by its Anglo-Saxon name of Cherestanc. Almost a thousand years later, this was the name given to Garstang’s new square when it was unveiled in 2009: Cherastanc Square.

Since 1310, Garstang has held a weekly market every Thursday, and the Market House is also open Wednesday to Saturday with plenty of local produce on offer.

Trough of Bowland

The Forest of Bowland is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Perhaps its most renowned feature is the Trough of Bowland which is a valley and high pass between Lancaster and Dunsop Bridge, 9 miles north west of Clitheroe.

The Trough of Bowland offers stunning views. It was the route taken by the Pendle witches to their trial at Lancaster Castle in 1612, and The Grey Stone of Trough at the head of the pass marks the pre-1974 county boundary between Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire
